The Polish Aviation Museum

Polish aviation history

As might be expected from a country that produced the fliers of the famous 303 Fighter Squadron, heroes of the Battle of Britain, plenty of Poles are into their aviation history – and Krakow is home to the Polish Aviation Museum. It’s situated a little way out of the centre of town in a large airfield of great historic significance, being one of the oldest in the world (1912, courtesy of the Austro-Hungarians).

The collection runs to more than two hundred aircraft, including twenty two that once belonged to Herman Goring, discovered in Poland after the end of the war. It seems that the German museums that make occasional overtures regarding their possible return to the Fatherland have wisely decided not to hold their breath. There are not, sadly, a great many examples of Polish aircraft from the period of the two world wars, most of them having been destroyed in those conflicts. On the other hand, the museum boasts that its collection of airplanes developed in or used by Poland since the end of the war is complete. The museum also houses a very fine and extensive collection of more than one hundred engines. So any true aviation buff will have a field day here, among the fixed wing jobs, the gliders, the motor-gliders and the helicopters. There is also a large collection of photographs and an aviation-history library.
